In Memory: Guitar Lightnin’ Lee

Our team is heartbroken to share that New Orleans rhythm and blues legend Guitar Lightnin’ Lee passed away on November 6, 2025 at age 83.

“We’re sad about the passing of our dear partner Guitar Lightnin’ Lee, a lifelong part of the New Orleans blues scene” says Tim Duffy, Music Maker co-founder. “He was a dear friend who will be sorely missed.”

Lightnin’ Lee (LeRoy Williams) played rhythm and blues with the exuberance of a man half his age. Raised in the Lower Ninth Ward, he performed with and around such icons as Earl King, Fats Domino, and Little Freddie King. His talent, lyrics, powerful voice, and boisterous personality radiated the spirit of New Orleans music.

Lightnin’ was featured as part of our exhibit at the New Orleans Museum of Art in 2018-2019. His photograph was also proudly displayed en route to the Superdome, where thousands saw his face every day.

With a little assistance from Music Maker, Lightnin’ was able to win a bout with cancer in 2019. He continued gigging with the same exuberance that had always marked his music until his passing.

Thank you for the music, Lightnin’. We will miss you dearly.
